SEOUL -- Hanwha Solutions, a chemical and energy company affiliated with South Korea's Hanwha Group, will work with a national cooperative federation to develop future agricultural technologies that combine renewable energy and smart farms.

At a groundbreaking ceremony in Yangpyeong, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) east of Seoul, on July 5, Hanwha Solutions signed a business agreement with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) to spread low-carbon smart agricultural technology and solar-based smart farm models nationwide.

The first smart agricultural model that utilizes renewable energy will be built at a smart farm in Yangpyeong for completion at the end of October. The two sides would establish a business model that operates a smart farm with solar energy after installing agricultural solar modules on top of a vinyl greenhouse.

"Responding to climate change and carbon neutrality are important issues in all countries in the world, and the integration of low-carbon and digital agricultural technologies into the agricultural field is a direction for our agriculture and rural areas to move forward," NACF vice chairman Lee Jae-sik said in a statement on July 5.

Hanwha Q Cells, the photovoltaic cell-making unit of Hanwha Solutions, will provide solar modules which are made half the size of regular solar modules and do not interfere with securing sunlight in a greenhouse.
