SEOUL, September 30 (AJP) - Israel's airstrikes have likely displaced up to one million people in Lebanon, according to Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who described it as potentially the largest displacement event in the country's history.

The Lebanese health ministry reported that more than 50 people were killed in Sunday's strikes, which followed the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israel. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel.

Israel also confirmed large-scale airstrikes on Iran-backed Houthi targets in Yemen, hitting military sites, power plants, and a port. Hezbollah announced that top military commander Ali Karaki and cleric Sheikh Nabil Qaouk were killed in Israeli strikes.

Mikati said the strikes forced residents to flee from Beirut and southern regions. Local authorities are struggling to provide shelter and medical care, as resources become strained. Residents like Aya Ayoub and journalist Sara Tohmaz shared their experiences of fleeing, highlighting the difficult conditions for displaced families.

The conflict escalated on Oct. 8, 2023 after a Hamas attack on Israel, which led Hezbollah to strike Israeli positions in solidarity with Palestinians. Hundreds have since been killed, and tens of thousands displaced on both sides of the border.

Israel's airstrikes in Yemen were a response to Houthi missile attacks and aimed at disrupting Iranian weapon transfers. The Houthis condemned the strikes, reporting casualties and vowing retaliation.

International concerns over a broader Middle East conflict are growing, with the U.S. warning Israel that a full-scale war with Hezbollah or Iran could make it impossible for Israelis to return to their northern homes.
