During a regular press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China has lodged a stern protest with India regarding Taiwan's official launch of the office in Mumbai.
"There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is a part of China's territory," she said. China firmly opposes any country it has diplomatic relations with engaging in official contact and exchanges with Taiwan, she added.
The office opened on Wednesday. In a congratulatory video sent to the opening ceremony, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said that the establishment of this office, following those in New Delhi and Chennai, signifies a continued commitment to improving relations between the two countries.
India has been strengthening its relations with Taiwan since the bloody border clash with China in June 2020. Taiwan's Foxconn has invested NT$50 billion (US$15.6 billion) in building an iPhone manufacturing plant in India, and the Indian government is currently working to attract a TSMC factory from Taiwan.
