SEOUL, October 30 (AJP) - U.S. social media giant Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is facing multiple lawsuits in Japan totaling 435 million yen (US$2.8 million) over allegedly fraudulent investment advertisements featuring unauthorized celebrity endorsements.

The lawsuits, submitted to district courts across five Japanese cities including Osaka and Yokohama, claimed on Tuesday the tech company failed to implement adequate measures to prevent scam advertisements that misused the identities of prominent figures, including space tourist and Zozo founder Yusaku Maezawa.

"If more people speak out, we'll have more regulations in place against false advertising. We would like affected people to contact us," said Kusuo Tsuneoka, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs, at a press conference in Chiba.

Thirty plaintiffs are seeking damages after transferring funds to fraudulent investment accounts they were directed to through the platform's advertisements.

The case follows a similar lawsuit filed earlier this year in Kobe, which Meta is currently contesting.
