SEOUL, November 04 (AJP) - An assault and gang rape of a newlywed couple was reported in eastern India.

According to news reports on Sunday, eight assailants gang-raped a 19-year-old woman on a railway track near Kanchrapara Railway Station in Kolkata, on Oct. 30.

The attackers reportedly abducted the woman, who was walking along the train tracks with her husband around 4–5 a.m., then sexually assaulted her while physically attacking her husband.

The couple had been driven out by family members opposed to their marriage and were trying to spend the night at the Kanchrapara station. After being forced out of the station, they wandered along the tracks until the assault occurred.

Local police apprehended all eight suspects by noon the same day. The suspects were identified as day laborers from Kanchrapara.

In August, a female trainee doctor was raped and murdered at a national hospital in Kolkata, sparking a major doctors' strike. Although police arrested a hospital employee as a suspect, the victim's family raised suspicions of a possible gang rape.
