The nomination, announced Tuesday by Japan's culture agency, was submitted in 2022.
It highlights the unique fermentation process that uses koji mold to simultaneously ferment multiple ingredients, including rice, in a single vessel.
If approved, the brewing techniques would become Japan's 23rd entry on the prestigious list, joining other cultural elements such as Noh theater and washoku cuisine.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi welcomed the recommendation, pledging Japan will continue promoting the industry by "sharing its historical and cultural richness with people worldwide."
