SEOUL, November 8 (AJP) - The legislature of Jammu and Kashmir has formally requested the restoration of the autonomous status it lost five years ago when India's central government revoked the special provisions.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday with majority support from its 90 members, calling for the central government to engage in discussions with the Jammu and Kashmir legislature to reinstate its constitutional autonomy, which was abolished in 2019.

The resolution does not carry legally binding power.

Jammu and Kashmir is a northern Indian region divided into two main areas -- Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. Kashmir, located in India, is a region contested between India and Pakistan.

When India gained independence from Britain in 1947, the Muslim majority in Kashmir sought to join Pakistan, but the Hindu minority in leadership chose to integrate with India. The two nations have since fought several wars over the issue, yet it remains unresolved, with Kashmir divided between them.

The Modi administration in 2019 revoked the autonomous status and special constitutional provisions of Indian-administered Kashmir, converting it into a federally governed territory. The Supreme Court of India upheld this decision.
