The action, organized by the Independent Union of Public Sector Doctors, marks the start of a three-week protest campaign, including planned sit-ins.
The strike comes despite government efforts to address long-standing issues in the healthcare sector. In April, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announced a monthly salary increase of 3,800 dirhams ($380) for doctors with a state doctorate, a demand that had been pending for 20 years.
Akhannouch also highlighted ongoing projects to upgrade and build hospitals across the country.
Morocco's healthcare sector faces persistent challenges, including the emigration of doctors to European hospitals. Medical students recently ended an 11-month boycott over concerns about reduced training quality and the shortening of medical degrees from seven to six years — a measure they say was intended to discourage graduates from seeking opportunities abroad.
The protests highlight ongoing tensions as Morocco grapples with retaining skilled medical professionals and improving healthcare infrastructure.
