SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai auto group extended its alliance with French tiremaker Michelin to develop premium tires for electric vehicles and eco-friendly tires. They will also establish a tire monitoring system that is necessary for upgrading autonomous driving.
In three-year cooperation with Michelin, Hyundai Motor said it would improve the durability, mileage and fuel efficiency of electric vehicle tires that should withstand high loads. Joint research will be carried out to comprehensively monitor the degree of tire wear, load on tires, and the degree of road friction and use it in vehicle control systems.

Hyundai said the improvement of vibration noise generated by high-speed driving of electric vehicles would greatly improve the driver's ride quality. "Through the technical partnership with Michelin, we will significantly upgrade vehicles' driving performance by maximizing the technology capabilities of both companies," Kim Bong-soo, a Hyundai Motor R&D division head, said in a statement on June 20.

The two companies forged a partnership in November 2017 for the joint development of all-season tires for electric cars. Tires for IONIQ 5 were developed.
