Deployment of advanced maritime surveillance radar set to begin in 2025

SEOUL -- The prototyping of a homemade maritime surveillance radar with significantly improved detection performance is set to begin for sequential deployment in 2025. It is essential for the offshore surveillance of ships in coastal areas and for sharing detected information with a military system.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), a state body controlled by the defense ministry, aims to complete system development through evaluations by June 2024. Defense Ministry data released in 2021 showed that the aging rate of coastal surveillance radars surpassed 70 percent, with many exceeding their lifespan.  

"As a key weapon system responsible for coastal surveillance throughout the Korean Peninsula, it is expected that the Korean military's coastal surveillance and early response capabilities will be further strengthened through radar design with significant improvement," Park Young-geun, a DAPA official in charge of monitoring and electronic equipment, said in a statement on October 7.  

In December 2021, DAPA signed a contract with STX Engine, a domestic manufacturer of diesel engines and electronic communication equipment, to develop a maritime surveillance radar. STX Engine has localized an advanced intelligent radar called "GPS-800k" that can operate in conjunction with army and coastguard radars. 

With its heightened separation and identification capability, DAPA said that the new device improved its maximum detection distance by 1.6 times and doubled the number of traceable targets. By operating multiple frequency channels, it can effectively respond to radio attacks. The use of semiconductor amplification devices instead of analog magnetron transmission devices has improved durability and maintenance convenience.
