US officials have warned Israel’s hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as Palestinian leaders, that the diplomatic clash over the creation of a Palestinian state set for the United Nations next week could further destabilize a region already in political tumult.
However, those have been ignored, by not only a Palestinian leadership that feels betrayed by the Obama administration, but also by an Israeli government that receives billions of dollars a year in US military and other aid.
The Obama administration is working to head off what would be a milestone moment for the Palestinian national movement when diplomats put forward a resolution at the United Nations next week to recognize a Palestinian state.
President Obama had hoped to convince the two sides to resume peace negotiations as an alternative to the initiative at the UN has “grave consequences”, and US and European diplomats were working late Thursday in efforts to reach a deal that could avert a UN vote.
Despite fears though, some analysts have pointed out that US lawmakers maybe avoiding a sinking ship by moving closer ties in the Arab states from Israel to Turkey and Iraq.
