Major South Korean department stores announced that their sales in December rose from a year earlier.
According to industry sources, Lotte Department Store's December revenue increased by 4.8 percent year on year. Hyundai and Shinsegae Department Stores saw their sales rise by 4.2 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively, over the cited period.
The sources attributed the sales increase to unusually cold temperatures. As the cold snap has gripped the country for the past weeks, coats are selling well, they said.
Sales of outdoor clothes grew 39-41 percent in December year on year, while sales of boots for winter rose 7.5-12 percent. Clothing accessory stores' sales soared 9-11 percent, the sources said.
