The market of “winter boots” has grown from a year ago, thanks to heavy snow and unusually cold temperatures.

Previously, wool boots were a leader in the market, but this year with foreign brands featuring a variety of materials, color and design, the winter footwear line has been expanded.

An industry source said on Jan. 21 that “customers who prefer unique items increased, and are moving on from wool boots to footwear which can fight the cold.” The winter footwear market has been becoming more flashy in order to capture more customers.

British brand Fitflop has launched new sneaker boots “Polar” that utilizes natural wool suede padding and a variety of other materials. It enhances the natural wool insulation using soft suede leather and applied the stylish design of the sneaker.

“We worried whether the reaction is not good for the new design, yet it sold out just one month after its release. We went into more production,” said an official of Fitflop.

Olivia Lauren, women's clothing brand, also marketed boots with different design which provided warmth. One of the most popular products is sheepskin deformed boots with a decorative buckle and wrinkles.

According to a company executive, sales are growing more than 75 percent from a year ago. "This reaction is better than expected," he said.

LG Fashion is also on board by importing Canadian brand Pajar boots. Pajar boots are made with sheep leather to survive the cold of minus 40 degrees Celsius in Canada. An LG official said much more customers visited LG stores than expected, though the company did not have any advertisement.

Besides, outdoor sportswear companies saw sales of their winter boots jump from a year ago. Nepa released boots “Silver Fox” for men with very thin thread, while Kolon Sport marketed a winter boot that applied the cow leather appearance.
