The relay began in October last year in Moscow, and the Olympic flame toured across Russia, including extreme locales such as Chukotka, the northeastern extremity of Asia in the northern part of the Russian Far East; North Caucasus, the northern part of the Caucasus region between the Black and Caspian Seas; and Russia's European exclave Kaliningrad between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea.
More than 14,000 torchbearers carried the torch 65,000km, making it the longest torch relay in Olympic history.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach handed over the flame to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the relay arrived in Sochi, according to local media.
About 2,900 athletes from 87 countries around the world are participating in the Games which run through Feb. 23 under the motto of "Hot, Cool, Yours.“
A total of 98 gold medals in 15 disciplines in seven sports are up for grabs at the Sochi Olympics, compared with 86 golds at the Vancouver Olympics four years ago.
