Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. said Wednesday it has opened a center for studies on submarines and warships.

The inauguration ceremony of the research institute took place at the company’s headquarters in Seoul Tuesday.

Completion of the institute’s building and other facilities is due for 2017, company officials said.

Daewoo Shipbuilding obtained an order to build three submarines from the Indonesian government in 2011, South Korea’s first orders for submarines from abroad.

Since then, it has won orders for naval ships from the South Korean Navy, Britain and Norway.

In mid-2013, Daewoo Shipbuilding clinched a US$230 million deal to build a Norwegian logistics and support vessel.

Under the contract signed with the Norwegian Defense Logistics Organization, Daewoo Shipbuilding will deliver the vessel to the Norwegian Navy by September 2016.
