"Han Gong-ju," a 2013 South Korean feature film, has won the best picture award at the 28th Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland, according to its distributor, Movie Collage, Monday.

"Han Gong-ju," directed by Lee Su-jin, was picked as the winner of the Regard d'or award Saturday (local time) from among 12 films in the category of international competition at the FIFF. It was entitled to a cash prize of about US$33,600.

The film depicts the difficulties a traumatized teen sexual-assault victim suffers while growing up after being forced to change schools. It is to open at South Korean theaters on April 17.

Previously, the movie received the grand prizes at two international film festivals - the 13th Marrakech festival in Morocco and the 43rd Rotterdam event.

It also won the CGV Movie Collage Award and the Citizen Reviewers' Award at the 2013 Busan International Film Festival.

In 2011, another South Korean film "Poetry," directed by Lee Chang-dong, won the top award at the Fribourg festival, an annual event which features mostly Asian and Latin American films.
