China pushes solar panel in cities

Air-conditioners, refrigerators and other electric appliances make our lives convenient. But in China, they're also putting huge strain on the country's energy supply.

That's why big cities like Shanghai are encouraging the use of solar panels among residents and businesses.

A large number of solar panels are being installed in a community in Shanghai.

One of these 5,000-watts photovoltaic systems on an 80-square-meter solar roof can generate enough power for a family of three. And the advantages aren't just environmental.

Businesses, which often face limits and shortages whenever electrical demand overloads in the summertime, also have much to gain by going solar. And the solar push doesn't stop there.

Shanghai is also looking to install solar panels on vast public buildings with spacious roofs, like airport terminals.

As China continues to grow economically, so does its thirst for energy. But the government hopes that by developing and promoting the use of new energy, this thirst will be quenched at just a monetary cost.
