SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai auto group agreed with the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan to launch a joint demonstration project aimed at acquiring core technologies for a fuel cell system for power generation.

The agreement on Thursday came two days after Hyundai broke ground for the second fuel cell plant in Chungju, 115 kilometers (71 miles) south of Seoul. Construction will be complected by the end of 2019. Hyundai would diversify its lineup to provide fuel cells for ships, trains, construction equipment and power generation.

Fuel cells produce heat, electricity and water through a thermochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Hyundai has touted hydrogen fuel as an alternative to solve global problems such as pollution and resource depletion.
