SK Telecom (SKT) said Monday that a business agreement was signed between Park Jin-hyo, chief technology officer at ICT R&D Center, and Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZ) Commissioner Kim Jin-yong, to establish 5G-based self-driving infrastructure and foster related industries.
The waterfront city in Songo is located in a vast free economic zone where various incentives such as tax reductions, estate support, and subsidies are given. SKT agreed to create 5G-based ultra precision maps in Songdo within this year and throughout the entire zone later.
"We will present the future of a 5G-based mobility smart city starting with the establishment of our 5G-based HD map in Songdo International City," said Park. SKT would update information on road conditions with a 5G-based real-time HD map update solution and multi-function ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) terminals.
In May last year, SKT unveiled HD Map, a high-definition map solution that would help autonomous vehicles navigate safely. Three-dimensional maps have been created with cars fitted with sensors. SK Telecom has said its solution was designed for vehicles capable of level 4 and level 5 automation, which require intervention by a driver just in case of an emergent situation.
SKT has joined the OneMap Alliance involving NavInfo of China, Pioneer of Japan and HERE Technologies, an Amsterdam-based mapping service provider, to produce HD maps. With the alliance's super precision maps, autonomous mobile operators will save time and money on building individual HD maps.
