SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, bolstered its business partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG, the largest telecom provider in Europe, by agreeing to set up a joint venture for the development of 5G-related core technologies.

The two partners would jointly develop 5G-based low-latency video data transfer technology, an in-building 5G router solution and Multipath UDP, which improves the speed and quality of data transfer using cable and mobile networks simultaneously.

"Deutsche Telekom AG and SK Telecom will continue to maintain their strategic partnership in the future," Deutsche Telekom Chairman Timotheus Hottges said in a statement that followed a business conference attended by top officials from the two companies in Seoul.

The two companies will cooperate in mobile edge computing and blockchain. SKT has made a strategic investment in MobiledgeX, an edge computing company founded by Deutsche Telekom. Mobile edge computing technology is used to provide real-time high-speed data processing and dramatically improve the quality of customer experience.

SKT and Deutsche Telekom have strengthened their competitiveness in 5G mobile services. SKT launched its commercial 5G mobile service in April, while Deutsche Telekom is ready to start its 5G service in Germany.

SKT and Deutsche Telekom plan to offer specialized 5G services while addressing potential security threats. SKT has tested a quantum cryptographic communication solution through cooperation with Deutsche Telekom. Quantum cryptography allows the completion of various cryptographic tasks that are proven or conjectured to be impossible using classical communication.

SKT will invest $30 million in a fund run by DTCP, a professional investment firm under Deutsche Telekom, to nurture promising ICT firms in Asia as unicorn companies. DTCP will establish an Asian office in Seoul.
