The goal was presented on Wednesday at a meeting of economy-related ministers led by Finance and Strategy Minister Hong Nam-ki who decided to push for the development of next-generation technologies related to self-driving, intelligent semiconductors, artificial intelligence, bio, hydrogen, 5G and secondary batteries.
A state-sponsored a preliminary feasibility study will be carried out to develop core technologies for the commercialization of 6G in 2028 through cooperation with the private sector.
South Korean researchers have called for the early and pre-emptive development of 6G technologies. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), a state-funded body in wireless communication domain, has been working on Terahertz (THz) band for 6G. THz is a unit of frequency defined as one trillion cycles per second.
In January, LG Electronics opened a 6G research lab through cooperation with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), a prestigious state science school, to secure core technologies for 6G mobile communication. In June, Samsung established a research team specializing in the development of 6G communication technology.
SK Telecom (SKT) and Samsung have agreed to push for joint research in 6G evolution technologies. The two companies would draw up requirements for 6G technologies and jointly study new business models using 6G. SKT has tied up with major equipment makers including Nokia and Ericsson on joint research into 5G upgrading and 6G evolution technologies.
