SEOUL -- Hankook Tire & Technology, a leading tire maker in South Korea, joined hands with SK Planet, a software and service developer, to develop an artificial intelligence-based solution that would detect on-road hazards by analyzing noise models collected from running vehicles.

Hankook Tire said in a statement on September 14 that based on noise data collected from tire test facilities, SK Planet would develop the hazard detection solution that uses the deep-learning ability of an AI.

The solution will be capable of detecting hazards such as black ice, snow and heavy rain so that local road and highway operators can remove hazards by spraying saltwater using a maintenance system or dispatch personnel.

Hankook Tire said that it is crucial to collect large quantities of noise data so that AI can learn patterns. South Korea has saltwater spray systems built into road infrastructure located at areas frequently affected by snow and ice. Saltwater lowers the freezing point to temporarily remove snow and ice.
