SEOUL -- StudioLAB will use organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology as a professional display for filmmakers under a three-year partnership with LG Display, a major flat panel maker in South Korea. OLED display technology would be combined with content produced by the Walt Disney Studios, an American film and entertainment studio.

StudioLAB explores and showcases cutting-edge technologies. LG Display said in a statement on October 21 that it would work with StudioLAB on a variety of projects to equip filmmakers with new production tools and provide consumers with fun, interactive and immersive experiences.

"This collaboration opens a whole new dimension of future possibilities and enables us to accelerate the innovation we need to quickly develop and test new types of experiences, now more than ever," StudioLAB's innovation partnerships director Matthew Deuel said, adding the two companies are already working on "some very cool projects."

LG Display said that Marvel Studios already uses OLED technology, having deployed 88-inch 8K OLEDs at locations for use in episodic visual effects review and color finishing. "The OLED suite of products provides us with the picture quality that we need to ensure the best viewing experience possible for our filmmakers and our fans," said Marvel Studios' technology head Eddie Drake.

"Whether we are evaluating contrast and color accuracy or testing extreme viewing angles, OLED displays have demonstrated why their exceptional picture quality is in a league of its own, and we look forward to seeing how OLED technology advances for years to come," Drake said.

LG Display offers OLED displays with a sound system that generates sound directly from the screen. "This new innovation partnership reiterates our commitment to providing the best display capabilities to Disney’s amazing filmmakers and technologists and our dedication to offering an ideal viewing experience of their beloved characters and worlds," LG Display's TV business head Oh Chang-ho said.

"We're hopeful this innovation partnership will help showcase the exceptional qualities of OLED to content creators and consumers around the world, delivering a powerful experience while pushing OLED technology to the next level," Oh said.
