SEOUL -- Undeterred by U.S. sanctions, China's leading technology company Huawei hopes to expand its position in South Korea, targeting companies that want data center servers and storage utilizing artificial intelligence technologies.

Huawei Korea displayed AI-based solutions and products at a trade fair in Seoul and introduced its smart store and healthcare service scenarios to visitors. "This booth is a place to introduce hardware and others that help companies take advantage of better technology," a Huawei official said.

Huawei Korea expressed its willingness to build an ecosystem that encompasses software and hardware in South Korea's AI market, saying the Chinese company would support the easy development of software.

Huawei opened its 5G lab in May 2019 in Seoul after the Chinese company was placed on a list of foreign firms barred from receiving components from U.S. exporters without a license. Through its lab, Huawei provides an optimized test environment and free services to South Korea startups and partner companies, focusing on cloud, virtual reality and augmented reality, connected cars, robots, and smart manufacturing.

U.S. companies need government permission to supply parts and technologies for the production of Huawei's flagship communications equipment and smartphones. Huawei Korea said the Chinese company has prepared for the impact of sanctions.
