SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, agreed with its German partner, Deutsche Telekom, to set up a new joint venture that would develop advanced 5G in-building solutions and develop market opportunities. In-building solutions are used to extend and distribute the cellular signal of mobile operators within a building with high-quality mobile communication for indoor environments.

The joint venture headquartered in Germany will be equally owned by SK Telecom (SKT) and Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecom provider in Europe. "The partnership between SKT and Deutsche Telekom is very meaningful at a time when the world is heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic," SKT CEO Park Jung-ho said in a statement on November 9.

SKT said the joint venture would be "well-positioned" to pioneer the market for 5G repeaters that ensure optimum 5G indoor coverage by amplifying radio frequency signals. 5G communication often involves the use of higher frequency bands which generate signals that are often too weak to penetrate buildings.

Deutsche Telekom has tested 5G/LTE dual-mode repeaters for in-building coverage in eight German cities. SKT said users experienced significant improvement in 5G and LTE for both voice and data experience.

The two companies would discuss cooperation in augmented reality and virtual reality services, mobile edge computing (MEC) and the app market. SKT has invested in MobiledgeX, an edge computing company founded by Deutsche Telekom. MEC is used to provide real-time high-speed data processing.

SKT and Deutsche Telekom have agreed to launch a joint venture for the development of technologies for non-face-to-face platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic has sent many people staying in their homes. Content and delivery services have gained popularity, many firms using "untact" marketing to attract customers.
