Under a deal with K-Water, a state water resource development and management agency, Hanwha Q Cells said that construction would begin before the end of 2020. "Floating solar power generation facilities, which produce eco-friendly electricity using the idle water surface, is the best solution to utilize limited national territory," said CEO Kim Hee-cheul.
In an effort to reduce the use of fossil fuel and nuclear power for electricity generation, South Korea is gradually switching to renewable energy sources. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), the state-run operator of nuclear power plants, will build a 300 MW floating solar power station in Saemanguem, an artificial reservoir created by a giant seawall on South Korea's southwest coast.
