SEOUL -- Hanwha System, a key defense contractor in South Korea, was selected to develop an artificial intelligence staff officer that would become an interactive brain trust to provide detailed analysis and aggregated assessments for decision-making by commanders. It would be the first military project to incorporate AI technology into an intelligent battlefield recognition system.

The system collects various information and tactical data of the battlefield in real-time and provides multiple analysis results to commanders through an AI learning model applied with deep learning. Based on statistics and analysis information provided by AI, commanders can recognize the situation more quickly and accurately.

"We will successfully develop an AI staff officer by combining our experience in developing command and control systems and artificial intelligence technologies accumulated over the past 40 years," Hanwha Systems CEO Kim Youn-chul said, adding his company would take the lead in realizing the advancement of South Korea's weapon system with advanced technologies.

Humans are susceptible to cognitive biases and these biases sometimes result in catastrophic outcomes, particularly in the high-stress environment of wartime decision-making. An interactive AI can mitigate the susceptibility of negative outcomes in decision-making by commanders. Hanwha Systems will apply AI to propose appropriate operations and customized strategies based on the size of units, ranks and the type of operation.
