SEOUL -- South Korea's convenience store chain operator GS Retail has partnered with a popular fried chicken franchise in an effort to diversify customer groups of its on-foot delivery service within a radius of 700 meters from a chicken outlet. Deliverymen will only carry lightweight menus, while heavy ones will be delivered by motorcycles.

GS25 launched an on-foot delivery service in August 2020. The service provides grocery delivery services for customers living in a radius of 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) from a GS 25 store. There are some 14,000 GS25 stores nationwide as of November 2019. Anyone aged over 18 can register themselves as a deliveryman using a dedicated smartphone app. Groceries are delivered for a fee of up to 3,200 won ($2.8) per run.

The on-foot delivery service garnered popularity among single households and young parents as their delivery orders arrived faster than conventional services that took more than 30 minutes. Because of a COVID-19 pandemic, many people chose to use grocery delivery services instead of visiting crowded places such as shopping malls and megastores.

GS Retail said in a statement on March 17 that the company joined hands with Genesis BBQ, the operator of fried chicken franchise BBQ, to provide an on-foot fried chicken delivery service. Some 20 BBQ stores will begin their pilot service this month. About 10,800 BBQ franchises will offer the on-foot delivery service by the end of 2021. The convenience store operator will increase the number of registered deliverymen from 60,000 to more than 100,000 by the end of this year.
