SEOUL -- Trigger, an augmented reality specialist in the United States, has joined an international 5G extended reality alliance led by LG Uplus, a mobile carrier in South Korea. The alliance works on "Space Explorer: The ISS Experience," an epic four-part immersive series showing a spacewalk shot in real space at a space station.

Trigger has become the 11th member of the Global XR Content Telco Alliance which was launched in September 2020. XR encompasses a wide spectrum of hardware and software that enable content creation for virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and cinematic reality.

LG Uplus (LGU+) serves as the facilitator of the XR alliance. Initial members included Qualcomm, Bell Canada, Japan's KDDI, China Telecom, Canada's Felix & Paul Studios, and Atlas V, a French VR company. The alliance expanded its membership to 10 in March by attracting Verizon of the United States, Canada's Orange and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom.

"We will continue to cooperate with various companies to create an XR ecosystem by promoting quantitative and qualitative growth of XR content," LGU+ 5G service business head Choi Yoon-ho said. With the joining of a strong AR company, the company thinks that the XR alliance will consolidate its position as the world's largest 5G content association.

The alliance selects content to be produced through regular meetings and expands the scope of realistic content to various fields such as performances and documentaries of sports stars while making new attempts by implementing two or more technologies at the same time or merging new technologies.

As its first content, the XR alliance is working on "Space Explorer: The ISS Experience" that shows astronauts living in the International Space Station (ISS). The first episode features the joy, wonder and danger of living in space. Viewers can see activities in outer space and experience flying in space with astronauts. The second episode shows astronauts growing plants, the sun's heat and meals in a weightless state.
