SEOUL -- A backpack equipped with a light fire hose reel has been developed for operations in mountainous areas. The backpack containing a 100-meter-long hose weighs only nine kilograms (19 pounds). Commercialization will be done by the end of 2021 for deployment at fire stations.

To put out fires in mountains or alleyways between buildings where fire trucks cannot reach, firefighters should carry 200-meter-long fire hose reels that weigh 56 kg each. The fire hose consists of short hoses that are 15 meters long and need to be connected before action. It is a tiring and time-taking process.

The National Fire Agency said that the new backpack tested at a hillside in April maintained enough pressure when it was fully rolled out and the time taken to deploy was far shorter. In another test in early May, the portable hose maintained enough pressure to spray water to a target more than 10 meters away, when hoses were connected to a length of 600 meters uphill.

"With new backpacks, we can move more swiftly and easily than conventional reels," Kang Jeon-wan, a firefighter, said in a statement, adding the portable fire hose would be very useful for putting out fires in the mountains or heavily populated areas.
