Naver researcher pledges quick commercial service using hyperscale AI platform

SEOUL -- The artificial intelligence center of Naver, a top web portal operator and IT company in South Korea, called for AI sovereignty, saying it can quickly release a commercial service using its hyperscale Korean-language AI platform called "Hyper Clova" that was unveiled in May.

Hyperscale computing is massive-scale computing that is normally incorporated in the processing of big data and cloud computing. The technique is ideal for running infrastructure for information technology services offered by global companies such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. Naver has unveiled Hyper Clova capable of analyzing massive datasets that can be used to develop new AI models.

"If data sovereignty was important when building data centers, AI sovereignty is now important," Naver Clova's AI business head Nako Sung said, adding Hyper Clova reflects an effort not to survive the global AI competition. Naver has teamed with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) to establish an AI research center that focuses on the application of hyperscale computing.

Sung said that Hyper Clova would open an era where anyone can use AI. "YouTube lowered the technical hurdles for broadcasting, resulting in more content. It is not an era led by a few experts, but an era where content can be created with creativity."

Hyper Clova will be applied sequentially to a voice interactive service for the elderly and chatbots, Sung said, predicting Naver will be able to release a commercial service faster than anyone else. "The competitive edge of super-large AI language models is not size, but what products and services can be created through them," he said.

Hyper Clova can recommend gifts depending on the recipient's situation and occupation and become a conversation partner for old people in a care service, Sung said.
