SEOUL -- Extremely high frequency is for the band of radio frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum from 30 to 300 GHz. Radiation in this band is called millimeter waves. 5G is dependent on spectrum in many different bands. 26 GHz and 28 GHz have emerged as two of the most important bands that make data transmission speed faster especially in areas where traffic is concentrated.
Samsung Electronics will conduct Australia's first 5G virtualized radio access network (vRAN) trial on 26 GHz, using integrated mmWave solution, for mobile and fixed wireless services with its Australian partner, TPG Telecom, which aims to triple its spectrum holdings by acquiring spectrum in all available license areas.
RAN resides between a device such as a mobile phone, a computer, or any remotely controlled machine and provides connection with its core network. Virtualized RAN, or vRAN, moves the controller functions of hardware base stations to centralized servers, bringing them closer to the edge of a network to allow mobile network operators to pool and adjust radio resources to better accommodate for user traffic.
Samsung's 5G vRAN provides a software-based architecture that enables simpler, more flexible and more scalable network deployments. It drives more efficient access to private 5G networks through easy deployment of baseband software in mobile edge computing (MEC) facilities that provide ultra-low delay and high-speed services regardless of physical distance.
In June, Samsung unveiled new chipsets that can boost performance, increase power efficiency and reduce the size of 5G end-to-end solutions. The new chips would power next-generation products such as 5G Compact Macro, a radio network configuration that integrates the baseband, radio and antenna in a small form factor.
Samsung will provide its Compact Macro and vRAN solution to TPG. Samsung's vRAN solution will be placed in TPG's in Glebe, a central district in Sydney, with its latest 5G mmWave product to be deployed in a wider area. "Samsung is excited to begin this trial with TPG Telecom powered by our innovative 5G vRAN solution and latest integrated 26GHz mmWave product, which will be the first in Australia," Kim Woo-june, global sales and marketing head at Samsung's network business, said in a statement on July 7.
