SEOUL -- CJ Logistics, South Korea's major logistics company, revealed a grand plan to digitally transform the traditional human labor-based company into an integrated logistics technology service company that utilizes artificial intelligence and big data.

Through a company vision showcase event held on October 21, CJ Logistics said that the company will lead innovation in the logistics market by adopting technologies based on robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data.

As the first step of its digital transformation, the company's main logistics warehouses will adopt some 170 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to carry cargo, including pallets and individually boxed products. The load-carrying robots will greatly reduce the time taken to carry cargo from racks inside the warehouse to loading bays and vice versa.

Piece picking systems, which are robots using vacuum suction fingers to pick up objects, will be deployed to warehouses to reduce human labor and safety accidents. CJ Logistics said that a picking system is currently being tested at a logistics warehouse in Deokpyeong some 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of Seoul. The robot system picks up parcels and drops them onto a sorting conveyor belt.
