SEOUL -- In a bid to secure a firm competitive advantage in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) markets, LG Display, a major flat panel maker known for rollable displays, released a new innovative product that improved screen brightness by 30 percent by applying heavy hydrogen and personalization algorithms for the first time in the industry.

Production of the new panel called "OLED.EX" is to begin in 2022. LG Display unveiled a prototype of a 65-inch TV applied with an OLED.EX panel in a media event on December 29. "We will provide differentiated customer experiences to consumers through the evolution of OLED devices, algorithm evolution, and design evolution," LG Display vice president Oh Chang-ho said in a statement.

LG Display said it has developed a high-efficiency light-emitting display that emits brighter light by changing hydrogen elements into deuterium with a more stable structure. It can express realistic and three-dimensional details of particles and accurately conveys the original color.

Deuterium-applied elements can maintain high efficiency even with increased brightness and operate stably for a longer time, the company said, adding it can express details and colors of images more precisely by predicting the individual usage of organic light-emitting diodes and learning user viewing patterns with machine learning-based personalization algorithms.

The panel's bezel is about 30 percent thinner from 6mm to 4mm, based on 65 inches, providing a more immersive screen. Starting in the second quarter of 2022, LG Display would apply OLED.EX to all series of OLED TV panels produced in its main domestic factory in Paju and Guangzhou, China. The supply cost of new products is not much different from before.

LG Display has developed bendable, foldable and rollable OLED panels. The company is now involved in a project to develop stretchable displays which are seen as the final phase of flexible display technologies. The world's first rollable TV unveiled at an electronics show in the United States in January 2019 can completely roll down its display into a box-shaped body when it is not being used. It can also roll out completely or partially to match the type of video content that is being played.
