State research institute demonstrates fine particle reduction system optimized for port handling machinery

SEOUL -- A state research body has demonstrated a device that can reduce fine particles generated from port handling machinery in the southern port city of Busan. The device reduced more than 80 percent of nitrogen oxides and particulate matters from reach stackers that are used to transport containers.
 
Particulate matters (PMs) generate various diseases by penetrating into a lung, and nitrogen oxides (NOs) cause acid rain and smog. The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) said its research team has developed a fine dust reduction device optimized for port loading equipment. It can simultaneously reduce fine dust in the form of a separate diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleaning and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Through a self-diagnostics function, users can check the condition of the device. To increase removal efficiency, the institute used a urea solution supply device and ammonia slip control technology. The demonstration was carried out for three months from December 2021.

"We will accelerate the establishment and support of policies to improve air quality in port areas as the fine particle reduction system for old port handling machinery has been developed," Cho Gyu-baek, director of KIMM's Busan Machinery Research Center, said in a statement on February 22. 

The research team would develop and demonstrate an integrated system of DPF and SCR through follow-up research. "We want to help strengthen the competitiveness of related domestic companies through the localization of related products," Cho said.
