Cooperation between LS Cable and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) covers superconducting power transmission and distribution devices and joint research in high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) that converts alternating current into high-voltage DC. HVDC cables are more advantageous for long-distance transmission and have less loss than conventional AC transmission.
LS Cable has developed a new superconducting coaxial cable that can transmit large amounts of power with little power losses during power transmission and generate no electromagnetic waves. The new product can improve the structure of superconducting layers to increase power transmission by more than 20 percent compared to existing products while reducing production costs by more than 10 percent.
"We will cooperate with the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute to secure and upgrade future power technologies so we can contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral country," LS Cable chief technology officer Lee In-ho said in a statement on February 24.
LS Cable is expanding its cable safety diagnosis service business, which diagnoses the overheating and lifespan of cables, to offshore wind power generation and submarine cables. In November 2021, the company tied up with Northland Power, a power producer in Canada, to cooperate in offshore wind farm projects.
