SEOUL -- Granulated blastfurnace slag is a by-product of the steel-making industry that can be produced by the rapid cooling of iron ore slag. It can be upcycled in cement to increase the strength and durability of concrete. Continental New Materials will use granulated blast furnace slag produced by South Korea's steel group POSCO to produce eco-friendly construction materials.

Continental New Materials is a venture company that manufactures eco-friendly construction materials by receiving limestone-free cement manufacturing technology from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). POSCO will stably supply granulated blastfurnace slag, while POSCO E&C will support quality verification at construction sites.

"We will continue to provide support so that POSCO's steel by-products can become eco-friendly cement materials and contribute further to carbon reduction," Kim Dae-up, head of POSCO's hot rolled and wire rod marketing division, said in a statement on Fevbruary 25.

Through its tied up with POSCO, Continental New Materials said it would expand the development of low-carbon eco-friendly cement products based on granulated blast furnace slag. Eco-friendly cement used for construction materials such as sidewalk blocks developed by Continental New Materials is expected to expand its application to construction sites.
