SEOUL -- South Korean shipyards boast the best shipbuilding technology in the world, especially in the segment of liquefied natural gas carriers, but European competitors are still good in world-class luxury cruise ships and yachts that require a high degree of workforce specialization and sophisticated technologies.

Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering, a mid-sized South Korean shipyard that has built coastal car ferries, will build a 22,000-ton luxury cruise ferry on an order from Pan Star, the operator of a cruise ferry service between South Korea's southern port city of Busan and Osaka, a port city on the Japanese island of Honshu.

The cruise ferry will have a hull length of 170 meters and can carry 46 crew members and 353 passengers. There will be cargo space for 250 containers. It will be deployed to the Busan-Osaka route from 2025. The plan is to make the cruise ferry itself a new night view of Busan by decorating the entire hull with lighting.

The deck will have an outdoor swimming pool, a jogging track, and a banquet space. Balconies will be installed in all rooms, along with various convenience facilities such as massage rooms, therapy rooms, saunas, fitness centers, snack carts, and cafes.

The cruise ferry will adopt a hybrid propulsion method to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by adding electric motors and generator functions to a diesel engine. Pan Star proposed a linear shape that can reduce noise and vibration as welll as a device on the side of the hull to minimize shaking and ensure stable sailing even through waves.
