SEOUL -- SK shieldus, the security service wing of South Korea's mobile carrier SK Telecom, released an artificial intelligence-based heating and air-conditioning solution capable of automatically controlling indoor temperature. Using the solution, business operators can efficiently manage the indoor environment of unmanned stores.

The solution called "Caps Smart Cooling & Heating" maintains a pleasant indoor environment using the internet of things (IoT)-based sensors that monitor temperature and humidity in real-time. The solution figures out the optimal temperature and humidity for each user based on the air quality data provided by IoT devices.

"We hope the solution will reduce not only energy cost but also improve customer satisfaction by creating a pleasant environment at stores," SK shieldus' senior managing director Cho Hyung-jun said in a statement on November 23.

Cho said the company aims to carry out environmental, social and governance (ESG)-related projects. To develop heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions, SK shieldus has worked with Bitfinder, a San Francisco-based company that developed an air quality monitor called "Awair," and SeedN, a South Korean company specializing in AI-based HVAC solutions.

As of January 2021, South Korea had some 600 unmanned stores that require customers to scan the barcodes of products they wish to buy. Many of South Korea's unmanned stores are located inside big buildings or industrial complexes in remote areas targeting workers who have to travel long distances on foot to visit a manned convenience store.
