SEOUL -- SK on, the battery-making wing of South Korea's SK Group, teamed up with a sister company to develop a battery diagnosis service that would allow customers to diagnose the remaining life of batteries and the level of charging without any separate procedures while charging electric vehicles.

The management of EV batteries has become crucial to keep cars in top condition. If batteries are poorly managed, they could combust to cause a fire that is really hard to put out. SK on will work with SK signet, a manufacturer of EV chargers, to introduce a battery diagnosis service in 2023.

SK signet will develop a charger that can collect battery data. "Customers will be able to check their battery status at the same time as charging to enjoy a safer electric vehicle life," SK signet's chief technology officer Kim Hee-wook said in a statement on November 24.

The two companies will push for the additional development of battery residual value evaluation. The life and state of batteries will be checked in real-time through SK on's "battery as a service (BaaS). SK On has improved its diagnostic performance by analyzing data the company has collected from about 4,000 electric vehicles for three years.

The time of diagnosis will take 30 minutes using a 50-kilowatt charger. The time can be reduced if the charging speed is faster. The results of diagnosis can be checked through SK signet's charger screen and a smartphone app.
