SEOUL -- Cosmax, a cosmetics original development manufacturer in South Korea, developed texture perception technology capable of predicting the performance of cosmetic products without actually using them. The solution can be used to create personalized products as it evaluates beauty products' spreadability through quantified values without involving subjective opinions.

It's been difficult to evaluate the degree of spreadability and moisture as the usability of cosmetic items is mostly judged differently depending on users. Cosmax has worked with a research team led by Park Jun-dong, a chemical and biological engineering professor at Sookmyung Women's University, to discover the relationship between cosmetic spreadability and products' viscosity and elasticity through machine learning.

"The result is valuable as it enables us to objectively quantify the measurement of cosmetic usability which was done by subjective judgments," Cosmax CEO Lee Byung-man said in a statement on February 7. The company said the mechanism will be used to develop customized products.
