SEOUL -- Ambiguous Dance Company, a South Korean contemporary dance performance team that collaborated with the British rock band Coldplay for dance song "Higher Power," will perform at a mask-free street festival in Ansan southwest of Seoul. Ansan earlier announced that the city would come up with diverse programs by inviting foreign performance groups to the annual event visited by more than 700,000 people every year.

Higher Power, released in May 2021, was nominated for the 64th Grammy Awards' Best Pop Duo/Group Performance section. As of April 10, 2023, the song's music video was watched by more than 58 million users on YouTube. Ambiguous Dance Company currently has about 119,000 Instagram followers.

Ansan Street Arts Festival is an annual event involving many street performers and art teams. The cumulative number of visitors reached 60 million since its first festival in 2005. The offline event was suspended in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ansan said in a statement the dance group will participate in the 19th Ansan Street Art Festival set to begin on May 5 for three days. A total of 73 performances which include a circus, and pansori, a traditional Korean narrative music, will be presented at the event. Unlike the last year's event which mainly involved domestic groups, 10 foreign performance teams will showcase their talents this year.

"We will invite not only domestic performance groups but also foreign performance teams next year so we can come up with more diverse programs," Ansan Cultural Foundation's spokesperson Kim Eun-jung told Aju Korea Daily.

Ansan is one of the most multicultural areas in South Korea. As of February 2023, the city had 89,381 foreign residents, accounting for 12.3 percent of the total population. The city is known for its multicultural food street with restaurants with various cuisines such as Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai.

Visitors can also enjoy games and events while watching a variety of performances. In 2022, the festival operator provided a section where young children could try on costumes from different countries.
