Autonomous robots are widely adopted at logistics centers and factories to reduce manpower and management costs. Self-driving robots equipped with various sensors including lidar and radar can carry heavy cargo without colliding with objects or structures. They can also develop the most efficient route to reach their destination to reduce robot traffic congestion inside factories in real-time.
Hyundai Wia said that the company's two types of Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR), with maximum loading capabilities of 1,000 kilograms (2,204 pounds) and 300 kilograms, and Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) will be deployed at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) located in Bryan County in Georgia by 2024.
According to the parts maker, a control tower system was developed to monitor and control the autonomous robots so that they can flexibly adapt to busy schedules inside the mega-factory. "We are happy to achieve good results in the robot sector, which is a new business field. We will continue the research and development to become a company that represents South Korea in the global robot and smart factory sectors," a Hyundai Wia official said in a statement on April 25.
