SEOUL -- South Korean food product maker Pulmuone will supply its vending machine that can cook refrigerated dishes in about 90 seconds to highway rest stops, and canteens at schools and companies in early December. The culinary robot provides instant noodle dishes including noodle soup with beef and broth, and Jjambbong, a spicy seafood noodle soup with various ingredients such as onions and garlic.

The instant food cooking machine called "Robot Chef" was developed in September 2023. Currently, three types of noodle dishes are available -- spicy beef soup, tonkotsu ramen, and spicy seafood noodle soup. The equipment has an automatic cooking chamber and a designated space for utensils. Consumers can choose their dish through the 15.6-inch (39.6 cm) touchscreen.

Pulmuone is showcasing its cooking robot at COEX Food Week 2023, a food exhibition in Gangnam, a Seoul district well known for rapper Psy's 2012 song "Gangnam Style." Visitors can use the food maker's service four times a day using two Robot Chefs at the event spot. More than 800 food-related organizations from 20 countries are participating in the four-day event that began on November 22.

"Starting next month, we will install Robot Chefs in business sites such as highway rest stops, convenience centers at companies and schools, and expand our range of unmanned sales platform services," Pulmuone's unmanned platform business head Nam Jeong-min said in a statement on November 24.

The adoption of robot chefs is steadily gaining momentum in South Korea. Since the beginning of the second semester of 2023, Soonggok Middle School in Seoul has used four robots to fry, stir-fry, cook soup and rice, and add ingredients. Currently, robot chefs are in charge of preparing meals for 645 students.

In February 2022, four different culinary robots were tested at the country's largest army boot camp in Nonsan some 154 kilometers (96 miles) south of Seoul to reduce the burden of military chefs and the risks of safety accidents.
