Small modular reactors (SMRs) have been studied to offer solutions to the challenges associated with traditional light-water reactors. These compact reactors, designed with modular technology, often allow for less on-site construction, increased containment efficiency, and enhanced safety.
According to data released by South Korea's trade and investment promotion organization KOTRA in 2022, 90 percent of Jordan's energy sources come from foreign nations. The Jordanian government unveiled its scheme to increase the portion of nuclear power generation to 15 percent of the total energy consumption by 2025. This initiative is aimed at reducing foreign reliance on energy sources.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) said in a statement that it has partnered with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) to conduct technology and information exchanges and suitability tests for its SMRs. KHNP has earlier revealed its plan to develop a 170-megawatt-class SMR and obtain standard design approval by 2028.
"We will cooperate with the JAEC so that this partnership could take us to the next level," KHNP CEO Whang Joo-ho said in a statement on December 4. The South Korean nuclear power plant operator is also working with Nusantara Power, affiliated with Indonesia's electric power company PLN, for the adoption of SMRs in Indonesia.
