The electric component maker said that the company developed a new wireless battery management system with upgraded battery performance. The BMS is the heart of an EV. It monitors the voltage, current, and other elements such as the temperature in real-time to optimize the lifespan and performance of batteries.
An ordinary BMS, connected with various cables and lines would weigh up to about 90 kilograms (198 pounds) and take up to 15 percent of space in a car's battery pack. According to LG Innotek, an ordinary EV can increase up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) in maximum distance if it is equipped with the new wireless BMS.
Any car parts connected using wires and connectors are prone to having cables disconnected or malfunctioning due to the constant vibration of the vehicle. Also, the assembly of parts can be automated as the manual job of connecting wires is unnecessary.
LG Innotek said that the company's 40-year experience of making wireless communication devices has helped the development of the new BMS. The new system module was designed to be compatible with all types of wireless BMS communication chips as well as various EV platforms.
