Poland signs mutual certification deal with S. Korea for military aircraft

SEOUL -- Poland's defense department has signed a mutual airworthiness certification agreement with South Korea's arms procurement agency for military aircraft. Under the agreement, Poland will acknowledge the flight safety of military aircraft verified by the South Korean government, and vice versa.

The airworthiness certification is designed to ensure the safety of an aircraft and evaluate the essential criteria for its design, production, and operation. Poland is the fifth country to sign the airworthiness deal for military aircraft with South Korea, followed by the United States, Spain, France, and Australia.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said on January 2 that the South Korean agency formalized the airworthiness certification agreement with Poland's defense ministry. Starting with the partnership with Poland, DAPA aims to promote technologies of the domestic aviation industry across Europe.

In September 2022, South Korean aircraft maker Korea Aerospace Industries, struck a $3 billion deal with Poland to sell 48 FA-50s to the European country. The fighter jets will be used as the main aircraft for combat missions by the Polish Air Force, replacing its conventional MiG-29 fighter jets.
