SEOUL -- LG Innotek, the electronic component unit of South Korea's LG Group, will work with AOE Optronics, an automotive lens manufacturer based in Taiwan, to upgrade optical component solutions for autonomous vehicle cameras. The Taiwanese company will share its know-how in precision lens manufacturing technologies and provide lenses used for camera modules.
Camera modules are essential for the collection of front traffic information and driving assistance. Demands for camera modules are growing as autonomous vehicle technology continues to progress. LG Innotek has produced modules for car components as part of a group-wide strategy to put more resources into viable sectors.
Without disclosing the investment amount, LG Innotek said on January 18 that the electric component maker invested shares in AOE. The South Korean company will receive the Taiwanese partner's lenses that can improve the functions of camera modules. LG Innotek will expand its camera module portfolio into self-driving vehicles and extended reality devices.
While LG Innotek specializes in optical design and process automation, AOE secures core technology and mass production capacity for autonomous vehicle modules. The South Korean companies also aim to develop the next-generation lens through joint projects.
