BARCELONA -- South Korean care robot company, Hyodol, has achieved a significant breakthrough at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona by clinching an award in the "Best Mobile Innovation for Connected Health and Wellbeing" category.
Hyodol specializes in the development of doll-shaped robots resembling six-year-old children. Equipped with a mobile communication module, processor, various sensors, and speakers, these care robots are powered by ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot solution.
Capable of engaging in verbal conversation with their elderly companions, Hyodol robots remind users to take medications, go for strolls, or sing favorite songs. Moreover, they alert guardians and a central control tower if their human companions remain inactive for extended periods.
On February 29, Hyodol was honored with the prestigious Mobile World Congress (MWC) Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO) in the "Best Mobile Innovation for Connected Health and Wellbeing" category. Competing against five other companies, including Swiss product authentication solution company, Authena, and China's mobile communications technology giant, ZTE, Hyodol emerged triumphant.
"It is an honor to receive the prestigious MWC GLOMO award," Hyodol CEO Kim Ji-hee told Aju Korea Daily. Kim emphasized the company's commitment to infusing warmth into its AI and internet of things (IoT)-based care robots and said: "We will continue to develop and distribute 'warm technology' that embraces society like a warm heart."
"With this award as an opportunity, we are determined to expand the reach of our technology and services to South Korea and other overseas countries in need of such solutions to enhance the health and quality of life of elderly individuals," Kim added.
In South Korea, approximately 7,000 Hyodol robots are deployed to the homes of elderly individuals living alone, providing essential support and companionship. Local governments, including provincial and county offices, have embraced Hyodol as a solution to address social challenges stemming from the country's rapidly aging society. Furthermore, the robot is widely utilized in the treatment of dementia patients at a university hospital in Gangwon province.
