SEOUL -- South Korean artificial intelligence technology developer Upstage has worked with Polaris Office, a domestic office productivity software developer, to create an on-device generative artificial intelligence solution that can generate text, translate, and summarize documents in real-time. The solution, which does not require any internet connection, is scheduled to be released in March 2024.

An on-device software is a standalone program that does not need a connection to a data server. Ordinary generative AI services like OpenAI's Chat GPT or Google's Gemini need devices such as smartphones, tablets, and PCs to be connected to an internet service. Upstage's AI office solution "On-Device AI Office" is a standalone software.

"We plan to commercialize On-Device AI Office within March," Upstage's communications manager Bae Sung-beom said. On-Device AI Office incorporates Ustage's large language model (LLM)-based solution "Solar." Solar is a deep-learning-based AI platform that understands and generates content. In August 2023, Solar received the highest score on an international large language model scoreboard by Hugging Face, a New York City-based AI company. It has competed with some 500 models including GPT-3, a Chat GPT-based service.

"Upstage remains committed to expanding generative AI services and establishing a strong presence in the global market, leveraging the power of our world-class LLM capabilities," Upstage's Vice President Kwon Soon-il said in a statement on February 29.

Meanwhile, Upstage CEO Kim Seong-hoon was among Korean entrepreneurs Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg met during his three-day visit to South Korea. The Meta founder, who arrived in South Korea on February 27, discussed cooperation for AI and extended reality solutions with executives from Samsung and LG. Zuckerberg also visited President Yoon Suk-yeol to discuss ways to expand collaboration with South Korean businesses.
